Att.Editors: The following item is from the Emirates News Agency (WAM)

ABU DHABI,Dec 5 (WAM) - The Higher Local Organising Committee of the FIFA Club World Cup UAE 2017 has reaffirmed full readiness the hosting by the United Arab Emirates (UAE) of the global sports event during the period from December 6 to 16.

"The UAE in general and the capital Abu Dhabi in particular along with all UAE citizens and residents wholeheartedly welcome the international guests of the FIFA Club World Cup , which provides an opportunity for world peoples to gain first-hand knowledge of our rich culture, and deeply-rooted customs and traditions as well as the generosity of the UAE people," Major General Mohammed Khalfan Al Romaithi, Commander-in-Chief of Abu Dhabi Police, Deputy Chairman of ADSC Board of Directors, and Head of the Higher Local Organising Committee, stated.

"The UAE playing host for such global sports events is a fresh international testimony to our well-integrated and sophisticated infrastructure facilities as well as our competent and well-qualified human cadres and a substantial proof of our abilities to provide a model to be copied for organising a much-coveted world championship," he added.

"The championship is a chance as well for us to express our sincere appreciation of the support lent by President Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum and Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, for the sports sector in the country, and their keenness to evolving sports activities at all levels," he added.

The 14th FIFA Club World Cup kicks off on Wednesday December 6 in the city of Al Ain. Though defending champions Real Madrid are the team to beat, the other six contenders will all be out to knock the Spanish giants off their perch.

Madrid is returning to the competition with largely the same squad as last year, while Gremio of Brazil are making their Club World Cup debut as newly crowned Copa Libertadores champions. The third Latin side in the competition are Mexico’s CF Pachuca, who is returning after a seven-year absence.

New Zealand’s Auckland City will look to draw on the experience they have gained from their eight previous appearances, while Urawa Red Diamonds have the task of continuing the excellent run of results enjoyed by Japanese clubs in the competition. Morocco’s Wydad Athletic Club and host club Al Jazira will hope to become the latest African and Asian sides to reach the final on their debuts. (WAM) (END/2017)
